HI-ya, students and parents:
Let's chat about our favorite ways to lead another life, whether it be through a magical journey to Neverland full of pirates and deadly adventures, or whether it be traveling through another country and meeting friends along the way; aren't books an excellent escape from our own daily rituals and habits?
A few of my favorites are the all time classic Charlotte's Web, as I dream of the tire swing scene with Fern and Avery and absolutely delight in Fern's motherly tenderness towards Wilbur. Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech pulls at your heart strings almost as much, but with a little twist in the end, much like Holes has when you figure out about the brothers and the revelation of the owner of the tennis shoes. Some adult favorites of mine are Edgar Sawtelle (probably the most well described scenes by a new novelist I've seen since Steinbeck's East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath), as well as Ken Follet's World Without End and Pillars of the Earth. Some easy fun reads that make you sit back and say, "Did someone steal my journal?" are Eat, Pray, Love and the ever classic, The Awakening. What are some of your favorites and why???

ReplyDeleteMy most recent hard-to-put-down favorite books are the Twilight series! I didn't want to go to bed at night, or feed my children, or do laundry (wait, I NEVER WANT to do laundry!:) I just wanted to read, read, read! I also loved Pride and Prejudice and To Kill a Mockingbird--The dad is so good! My family all loved the Harry Potter books, so I need to get started on those now. Oh, I also love The Christmas Box, and since it's almost Christmas, I might need to read that one AGAIN!
ReplyDeleteHaley's mom
Mrs Francis,
ReplyDeleteI also love Charlotte's Web! I listened to Eat, Pray, Love and it made me want to eat LOTS of pasta, go to Italy, see the world, and do some serious yoga! :)
Lori, I also have read the Twilight series while home with Palmer before I went back to school and could do nothing but feed her and put her to sleep until I was finished! I didn't like the second one as much as the others, it sort of lulled on, and I DETESTED the first movie. It ruined it for me, as did the Tale of Desperaux movie. I ALSO LOVED Eat, Pray, Love, and heard Julia Roberts is going to be playing a role in this Book made movie also. I'm not sure I will see it though with my history of not enjoying the movie version. Sounds like we have similar reading interests! Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteBooks are truly amazing. Non- Fictions teach you a bunch, while Fictions are just like dream-come-trues. Some of my favorite fictions are Diary of a Wimpy kid, they are truly hilarious and fun to read. Jeff Kinney seems to have a spell in his books that makes you never want to stop reading his books. One of my all-time favorites is THE MARVElOUS ADVENTURES OF EDWARD TULANE. Every time I read that book I cry, the book puts you under a spell that makes you become emotional about the book even if you usually do not feel emotional about books. The book is about a china bunny doll who has no value of the love of the wealthy girl who cares for him, only of the clothes and acceries he is showered with and his beauty. The girl and her family go on a cruise and because of two mean boys, the doll(Edward Tulane) is knocked to the bottom of the ocean. Will Edward learn the value of love? Read to find out. Number the stars is a wonderful but sad book. It is about the German invasion Denmark and the main charecter's best friend is Jewish.

My book Black and White connects there are four little boxes. One connects with one then the other one connects with the next one. It just keeps on going. It is really cool how it works. I want to read another book like that. That is really cool I never noticed that until Haley told me then I saw how that works Do you know of any other books that do that? If you do I would like to read them. Why did they start decorating the building with newspaper? Well I hope you love the book as much as I do now.

My favorite Caldecott book is Ox-Cart Man because the pictures just walk across the pages. Kind of like there telling the story instead of the words. Here is a little summary of the book; a pioneer who spends months trying to grow, harvest, shave, and butcher the animals just in time to make some money to buy the supplies for the next up coming months. This book is a realistic fiction because it tells about a life of a pioneer but the story isn’t real. If you ever want to experience the life of a pioneer this is the right book to choose:)
ReplyDeleteTaylor;)
My Caldecott book was Fables. I enjoyed the story Two Ducks and the Fox. The reason I liked it was because the duck got fooled by the Fox. The duck said the Fox was gentlemanly. The other duck said I don’t like the Fox. Don’t go there again. The duck said the Fox was gentlemanly. This duck got them caught.

My literature book is Black and White. It connects in four stories, 1. A boy on a train 2.Cows that leave 3. Train stop that a train never comes 4. A boy whose parents go whacky-doodle! They all connect some how!!! Find out in Black and White:)

My book is Shadow.I liked the illistrations in the book because it does not show the real it shows black figures. You can see the shadow next to the black figures. The shadow loves to see people dance. Well the animals have a shadow but they are not dancing. But in the beginning of the story it says that the sun has no shadow and all the children and the moon has no shadow. The Earth, the waters, the fire own no shadow. Shadow has no shadow. I didn't really know what that ment.

ReplyDeleteThe book that I read was the shadow.I like all of th wonderful pictures in this book. I liked the fact that the shadows are not bad but they are not good some times they are very mean and hont your dreams and other times they just dance by the fire. WhatI did not like adout this story is that this is not a book that I would go home and read because I like mystery books and scary books. This book reminds me of a dream that I had when I was little it was not scary but it was not happy.
The book you got are group for Caldecott is a good book the book is Song of the Swallow. The book Song of the Swallow really earned the Caldecott.
ReplyDeleteMeaghan and Brooke
The book I read was fables and my favort story in the book was the hen and the apple tree. I like it because the Wolf tried to get te hen but never sukseeds.I also like it because it also teaches you a leson
ReplyDeleteThe books you’re reading out loud are good but are favored one is Despereaux. It has a lot of pation and why wound the aunt say ado (fair well). I love the book so fair I hope I can read it again and again.
ReplyDeleteMeaghan
The books you read for read aloud are really exciting ,but Desperaux is my favorite out of all ot them! Desperaux has a mind of his own and makes me laugh! He might be small but he has a big imagination! The first time I heard of Desperaux I thought he was going to be scared of everything! But , boy was i wrong!

The book golem that I read is very odd.I think that if a man could be made out of clay It would take lots and lots of lightning and magic.Golem was a very kind clay monster. But he is very scary to some people! The sad part is when Golem went to the dead. There enimies are people who dont beleive in god, because they have a different thoutht about there gods. Renee, Ben, and Kyrah henderson
ReplyDeletehello Mrs.Francis I love the book that I picked it is a great story and it is about the boy who helps birds and dose sweet things for his family. YOU ARE THE BEST TEACHER EVER!
ReplyDeleteautumn
Song of the swollows is really old. It got the award before my dad was born and he's 57! The book was new because I don't remember reading a book were the main idea is about a boy that likes to rase birds. I do think it needs more spazaz to it.It's probley because it's so old don't you think?

Hey Mrs. Francis! The Caldecott I read was “Black and white!” It was a fun book! The illustrator was, David Macaulay. It was mostly about 4 stories that were similar. I enjoyed the part, (In the second story) were they started dressing up in newspapers. They looked strange! The fourth story was about a bandit trying to blend in with cows. I know weird! The 3’rd one was about girls whose parents went dumb and were dancing around the house in newspaper. Also, the first one was about a little boy on his first trip by himself on a train. H A L E Y
ReplyDeleteI am thrilled the Caldecotts are helping you all to appreciate not only authors, but illustrators as well. After studying how magicially they work with light, color, shadow, shape, and characterization--I hope you all will aspire to do creative things with your own writing, artwork, and such from hereon out! My alltime favorite Caldecott medal winning illustrators include David Weisner with Free Fall, Flotsam, and Tuesday; Kevin Henkes' Kitten's First Moon, and even though the holidays are over: Polar Express. If you all are loving Caldecotts, I can't wait to introduce you to Sharon Creech and our Newbery unit!!! Mrs. F

ReplyDeleteThe House of dark shadows is a mysterious and magical book for 4th graders. It's the sppokiest book; They transport from the linen closet to locker 119 in their school, a family murdered 30 years before the Kings moved in, dark shadows strech upon hallways and other secrets that Xander and David haven't found yet. Even R.L. Stine says it's spooky, creepy, and mysterious, and he's the author of Fear Street and Goosebump series. I can believe him. There is even more of the DREAMHOUSE KINGS..........watcher in the woods, is the forest keeping a secret from the family.........gatekeepers, the house is hungry for the kings.......timescapes, the world needs to be saved....whirlwind, coming in January 2010....... Frenzy, coming in May 2010. Like the author Robert Liparulo said "DREAM HOUSE OR BAD DREAM!"
